With the January blues setting in for some, today marks Blue Monday - classified as the most depressing day of the year. The shift from the festive spirits to long nights and cold weather can be hard to swallow.
That's why we know and value the importance of mental health wellbeing, it's essential to living a happy and healthy life. To help raise our spirits, we've shared six helpful tips to brighten your mood.
6 top tips to improve your mental wellbeing:
1. Reframe from unhelpful thoughts
The way we think, feel and behave are linked. Sometimes we develop patterns of thoughts or behaviors that are unhelpful so recognising them, and taking steps to think about things differently can improve your mental health and wellbeing.
2. Be in the present
If we take time to be aware of ourselves and be in the present moment, noticing our own thoughts and feelings, and the world around us, we can gain a better perspective. This is known as being more mindful.
3. Get good sleep
Good-quality sleep makes a big difference to how we feel mentally and physically, so it's important to get enough.
4. Connect with others
Spending quality time with friends or family, talking to someone about how we are feeling, or finding ways to help other people can all help stop you from feeling lonely and improve your mental health and wellbeing.
5. Live a healthy life
Being active, enjoying the outdoors and having a healthy, balanced diet all impact how we feel. Also binning bad habits like smoking, cutting down on alcohol and caffeine can have a positive effect on our mood.
6. Do something for yourself
From enjoying your favourite hobby, learning something new or simply taking time to relax, it's importance to do things that make you happy.
At Careys, we are aware of the troubling statistics which state that, each year, one in four individuals are likely to experience mental health problems. To help mitigate this, we provide an open, supportive forum where our employees can voice any difficulties they might be experiencing. We strive to support and aid them every step of the way in their recoveries.
We need to remove any potential stigma around mental health, as we all have it. Sometimes it’s good, other times it’s bad. Talking about it openly reduces the size of the elephant in the room and with the support we have within Careys, together we can turn the elephant into a mouse. The most important thing to know is that you’re not alone and I would implore us as an industry to talk about mental health.
