At Careys, we’re passionate about supporting all our employees to help them reach their maximum potential. We believe that it's not only what you learn that’s crucial, but also how you learn it.
Trainee Quantity Surveyor, Taylor, exemplifies the positives of this approach. When we caught up with Taylor this week, she shared details with us about her role and responsibilities, enthusiasm for the industry and career ambitions.
Deciding on a career in construction
I joined Careys in March 2018 as a site administrator. In this position, I spent a lot of time with site surveyors – talking to them and getting a better understanding of what they do. This initially sparked my interest in surveying.
My role and responsibilities
I’m mainly responsible for managing our subcontractors, requesting quotations, analysing costs, providing orders and making payments. In addition, I also help my team do take offs of new jobs, assist in formalising budgets and keep records of variations in projects.
My favourite project
I currently work on Sainsburys and ASDA frameworks, which I really enjoy. There are multiple sites all operating at the same time, which gives me the opportunity to work with more people internally and externally.
Five years from now
Five years from now I will have completed an MSc in Quantity Surveying and be working towards progressing my career at Careys.
Overcoming challenges
I began my role in quantity surveying in January 2019, so I’m continuously learning and facing challenges. To overcome these, I seek guidance from other members of my team, who are always willing to help me – they’re the best!
My advice to anyone looking to pursue a similar career
I would encourage them to speak to quantity surveyors, I believe the best way to get a thorough understanding of the role is by talking to those who have gained experience in the field.

Summarising the culture at Careys in three words
Teamwork, diverse, opportunities - I think Careys puts their employees best interests first. I’m thankful to be given this opportunity to develop my career, and I look forward to a future working for Careys.
