The move not only allows the Careys team to have immediate access to military-style bandages that can prevent an injured person from bleeding out, it also means the company is supporting the RAPAID charity. Every penny spent on emergency bandages kits supports RAPAID’s mission to equip taxis across the UK with their life-saving emergency bandage kits. The charity has already equipped taxis in London, Manchester, Swindon, Oxford, Exeter, and Plymouth, which display green stickers, showing that the kits are on board. The idea is that cabs are in constant circulation so any member of the public can flag one down should there be an accident or incident and a need to stop the bleed until the emergency services arrive.

With site work being such a big part of the company’s day-to-day work, we decided to reinforce our site safety by purchasing RAPAID kits for our site teams.

We first learned about RAPAID emergency bandage kits when a member of our team spotted RAPAID’s co-founder, Alex Chivers, talking about RAPAID on morning television. The immediate benefit of RAPAID was clear and considered to be a fantastic initiative, so it was proposed that the kits be provided to each of Careys’ site teams.

Having delved a little deeper into RAPAID, Careys Regional HSSQ Manager, Liam Boyle, discovered that each RAPAID kit has an 8-year shelf-life and contains everything needed to stop the bleed without the need for any training or experience. Liam contacted Alex to ask about the possibility of purchasing kits for our teams and, following a brief conversation, Alex sent up a trial kit, so that we could see for ourselves just how quick and easy RAPAID kits are to use.

Careys is dedicated to the health and safety of our employees, and providing a safe working environment, not only for our employees but also the communities in which we live and work. We’re always trying to find new ways of improving our health and safety best practice and, given the nature of our work, it’s important that we identify and mitigate risk. Having RAPAID kits on site will give our teams that extra level of safety and peace of mind.

We have stores on all our sites, which is where the RAPAID will be kept. We’re also going to let the local community near each site know that the kits are available for the public to use should they be needed, just as defibrillators are.

In areas such as London, where our sites are so close to public areas, you never know what might happen or who might need emergency medical help – so having the kits isn’t just for our safety, it’s for everyone’s.

Liam Boyle, Regional HSSQ Manager

It’s fantastic to see more and more companies taking it upon themselves to protect their teams and the communities in which they operate by having bleed kits to hand. The sad fact is that a serious haemorrhage can cause someone to bleed out in less than three minutes, so acting fast with the right medical equipment until the emergency services arrive is essential.

Health and safety is a high priority in the construction sector and, with their RAPAID bleed kits on site, Careys are ensuring that the risk of an accident turning into something much worse is reduced.
