Our scope included major earthworks and remediation of former industrial land; a manual dig to expose and temporarily divert services; excavation of a vast quantity of material to a depth of four metres; the breaking out of guide walls, secant piles and other concrete obstructions to capping beam formation level; installation of concrete blinding and kickers to the capping beam; fixing of steelwork and shutters; and two concrete pours.

500 river barges used to remove excavated materials, reducing lorry movements and congestion in central London

The first phase of the project saw our team begin installation of capping beams and pile mats, in addition to excavation works for the construction of the site substation. We completed these works during phase two, in addition to installation of a reinforced concrete slab and propping to the basement’s capping beams.

Our team delivered a substantial number of works over this period including manual excavation to expose and temporarily divert services, the breaking out of guide walls, secant piles and other concrete obstructions, fixing of steelwork, and two concrete pours. Due to the close proximity of multiple residential developments to our site, our team undertook extensive measures to limit or eliminate noise, dust and vibration wherever possible.

Due to the challenges of accessing the site and the close proximity of the River Thames to our works, 500 tonne barges were used to remove 80% of the 152,000m3 of material we excavated. This overcame some of our access difficulties, while saving approximately 100 lorry movements a day, thus benefiting the environment and the local community.

We took extreme care when loading barges to ensure there was no discharge into the river. This was an extremely complex mission in itself, as we had to seek permission to block the road for two hours so that the barge could be loaded and the time slot changed according to the tides.

The taller structures on site were the habitat of protected peregrine falcons. Our team put measures in place to protect any grounded juvenile falcons while awaiting the arrival of the client’s appointed ornithologist. Steps included keeping sight of the birds, alerting the supervisor, cordoning them off and staying alert to any stressed adult falcons, which can be prone to attack while protecting their young.

Our team received training from the ornithologist on how to carry out our works without impacting the birds and their environment.
